Angelina Muga Ooro, aged 75, is a widow residing in Kaila village, Kisumu, where she lives with her granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. Angelina is an extraordinary elderly woman who shoulders the tremendous responsibilities of providing for her family.

Her granddaughter, Achieng, faces physical challenges that limit her ability to contribute significantly to the family’s income. Achieng, a young mother, is blessed with two beautiful children who are now under the care of their great-grandmother, Angelina.

Despite her advanced age, Angelina wakes up every day with the sole purpose of ensuring her family is well-fed. To make ends meet, she has been engaged in the charcoal business for many years, a strenuous endeavor that involves cutting down trees and converting them into charcoal.

In her younger days, Angelina could manage to harvest more trees for charcoal, but her strength has waned with time. Presently, it takes her an entire week to gather the necessary materials and produce only half a kilogram of charcoal. She candidly admits, “I have grown tired of the charcoal business. I am aging and lack the physical strength I once had. But if I don’t work, my family will go hungry,” Mama Angelina laments.

In an effort to diversify her income sources, Angelina ventured into the sisal business. She harvests sisal crops and painstakingly processes them by hand to create ropes for sale. She describes this job as incredibly taxing, as the manual labor has taken a toll on her knees and legs. Nevertheless, she perseveres, stating, “I don’t have any other choice.”

Desperate for assistance, Mama Angelina is actively seeking registration in the Manna’s Widows Program, which offers a monthly feeding program for widows in need. She believes that this program will significantly alleviate her burdens, allowing her family to rely less on grueling work to put food on the table. She emphasizes the urgency of the situation, saying, “We could really use the help. My granddaughter is disabled, and I am the only support they have.”
